A lingual crossbite occurs when the top teeth bite inside of the lower teeth instead of the outside. A crossbite that involves the front teeth is called an “anterior crossbite.” When the back teeth are involved it is referred to as a “posterior crossbite.” Patients can simultaneously suffer from both an anterior and posterior crossbite. Crossbites can be aesthetically unappealing and also interfere with chewing and speaking. Over time, a person with a crossbite may also develop facial asymmetry or temporomandibular joint (TMJ) problems. This can cause painful pressure on the jaw, head, and neck. Crossbites can also make individuals more susceptible to decay, gum disease, premature wear of the teeth, bone loss, and an unbalanced facial appearance.
The most common cause of a crossbite is heredity. Crossbites can also develop as the result of crowding or jaw discrepancies.
Crossbites should be treated by an orthodontist. The treatment to correct a dental crossbite may include braces, dental appliances, like an expander or spring aligners, or a combination of both. Dr. Chang will diagnose the severity and cause of the crossbite bite to determine the proper treatment options. Treatment may include one or more of the following:
The best timing for correcting crossbite is usually while a patient is still growing. Therefore, it is essential that Dr. Donna Chang monitors the growth and development of children starting at the age of 7. Contact Ace Orthodontics to schedule a complimentary consultation.
